The best time
to visit Greece with kids.

Late May through June and September are the best time to visit Greece with kids: highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s, a sea warm enough for all-day swimming, and ferries you don't have to book weeks ahead. July and August bring 90-degree afternoons and sold-out island routes, and from November to April many island hotels and tavernas close.

The quick answer

When is the best time to visit Greece with kids?

June is the single best month for most families: the sea has reached the low 70s, days are long, and the July crush hasn't started. September matches it, with a sea that's had all summer to warm. Timing matters more in Greece than in most of Europe because two things are seasonal at once, the nonstop from Boston and the islands themselves.

The sweet spot

Greece in May, June or September: the sweet spot.

These windows give warm, swimmable weather without the heat that makes midday sightseeing miserable with young kids. Our Greece guide's rhythm, Athens mornings and island afternoons, works best when the thermometer cooperates. May is green and not yet crowded, though the sea is cool early in the month. June and September are the swimming months.

The worst time to go

Greece in August: the worst time to visit with kids?

For most families, yes, along with late July. Greece in August is the busiest, hottest, priciest stretch of the year: Athens regularly reaches the low 90s, Greeks head to the islands for the August 15 holiday, and popular ferry routes sell out ahead. It's still doable if you plan around midday heat, book ferries early and pick a base with a pool.

The other worst time to visit Greece is the opposite end of the year, if you want islands. From November to March many island hotels and tavernas close and ferry schedules thin out. Athens still works then; the small islands mostly don't.

School vacation weeks

How each New England school week fits Greece.

February vacation (Feb 15 to 19, 2027). No nonstop, since Delta's Athens flight is seasonal, so plan on one connection. Athens is in the upper 50s: fine for the Acropolis without lines, not for islands. Honestly, one of the weaker February picks.

April vacation (Apr 19 to 23, 2027). Check that Delta's seasonal nonstop has started for your dates. Athens is in the upper 60s and green; the sea is still around 62°F. Orthodox Easter 2027 falls on May 2, so April vacation misses the Easter rush.

Summer. Late June is the sweet spot of the school summer. From mid-July, book ferries ahead and plan a midday rest.

Thanksgiving and December break. Athens only, with a connection and many islands closed. Quiet and cool, good for history, not for beaches.

Our pick: a late-June week. School is out, the sea is in the low to mid 70s, and July's ferry crush hasn't started. April vacation works for an Athens-heavy trip. Dates are on our school vacation page.

When we went

Six months on Syros, and the ferry system we learned the hard way.

We've spent more time in Greece than almost anywhere: six months on Syros across two Boundless Life cohorts, where the girls did a stretch of international school, and we've been back multiple times since. Our notes don't tie those stays to specific months, so we won't give you a dated diary.

What held true every time: the Acropolis only works right at opening, before the heat and the crowds. The big, slow Blue Star ferries in business class beat fast catamarans with kids. And ferries rarely line up with flights, so we sleep at the Sofitel at Athens airport on arrival and at the Piraeus City Hotel the night before flying home. For calm, shallow beaches, Naxos is where we'd send a family first.

By age

Which month suits which kids.

Babies and toddlers

Late May, early June or late September, when the heat is manageable and Naxos beaches like Agios Prokopios and Plaka are warm and shallow enough to paddle. Keep a quiet stretch after lunch, when Greek towns slow down anyway.

Ages 5 to 10

June and September. The sea is at its best, the Acropolis is a real wow at this age, and the ferry deck becomes a highlight. July works if you accept an early-morning, pool-afternoon rhythm.

Tweens

April or October for a history-heavy Athens trip with one big island, when walking all day is comfortable. September for the full beach-and-ferry trip.

What to skip in the wrong month

  • July and August: same-day ferry plans and any midday Acropolis visit.
  • November to March: small islands. Many hotels and tavernas close and ferry schedules thin out.

Questions

What families ask us.

What is the best time to visit Greece with kids?

Late May through June, or September. Athens highs run from the upper 70s to the upper 80s, the sea is warm enough for all-day swimming by June, ferries are easier to book, and crowds at the Acropolis and on the islands are noticeably thinner than in peak July and August.

What is the worst time to visit Greece with kids?

Late July and August, for most families. Athens highs run in the low 90s, the August 15 holiday sends Greeks to the islands, and popular ferries sell out. For an island trip, November to March is the other weak window, since many hotels and tavernas close and ferries thin out. Athens on its own still works in winter.

What is Greece like in May?

Is Greece too hot for kids in August?

Often. Athens highs run around 90°F, the Cyclades get the strong meltemi wind, and popular ferry routes sell out. It works with an early start, a pool, and ferries booked well ahead.

Is Greece worth visiting in December or March?

For Athens, yes; for the islands, less so. Winter and early spring are cool and can be rainy, many island hotels and tavernas close from roughly November to April, and ferry schedules thin out. March 25, Greek Independence Day, brings school parades to Athens.

When is the sea warm enough to swim in Greece?

Is there a nonstop flight from Boston to Greece for April vacation?

Delta's Boston to Athens nonstop runs daily in season, roughly April to October, so check it has started for your dates. In February and around Thanksgiving, plan on one connection.
