Greece: is it good
for a family trip?
Yes, with one honest caveat: the flight is the longest of our regularly flown routes. Delta flies Boston to Athens nonstop daily, about 9 hours, and the payoff on the other end, Athens plus real island time, is worth planning around that flight rather than avoiding it.
The Fredette Family in Greece
How Greece scored with our kids.
Six things we rate every trip on, out of 10, from our own family travel, plus our overall score, which is simply the average of the six. Flight ease and value are calculated the same way for every destination.
Flight ease
7.5/10About 9.1 hours nonstop from Boston. We score every flight the same way: start at 10, take off half a point for each hour beyond 4 (a quarter point per hour past 10), and a point for each connection. Delta flies Boston to Athens nonstop, daily in season (roughly April to October). Reaching the islands adds one more step, a short domestic flight or a ferry from Piraeus, so plan the arrival day around it.
Kid friendly
10/10The people love children, especially in the smaller towns. The food runs the whole spectrum, so whether your kids want pasta, chicken nuggets or octopus, there is something for them. There are lots of parks, the restaurants are genuinely kid friendly, and between the beaches, the sunshine and easy ferries from island to island, it is the one we give a full 10.
Walkability
9/10It depends on where you go, but most of the towns and island villages we stayed in were easy to get around on foot.
Value
6.6/10Greece's cost of living index is 53.3 (Numbeo, mid-2026, where New York is 100 and the US overall is 69.7), about 24% below home. We score value the same way for every destination: costing the same as home is a 5, and every 10 points cheaper or pricier moves it a point. It is a country-wide average, so big cities and tourist hot spots run higher and small towns and villages lower. Pick your spots and it is super affordable. Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and the other touristy islands run well above this number, while the smaller towns and islands are really inexpensive.
Food
10/10Some of the best food and wine we have ever had in our lives.
Weather
9/10Usually wonderful. It depends on the time of year you go; the colder months can bring some bad weather.
Overall
8.7/10One of the best family trips we have taken, and we will be back.

Nonstop to Athens, then a connection to the islands.
Delta's nonstop from Boston to Athens runs daily, about 9 hours. It is the longest flight in our regular rotation, tier three on our ranked flight-length guide, so we plan the arrival day around that rather than being surprised by a rougher final hour. Reaching an island from Athens needs one more step, either a short domestic flight or a ferry from Piraeus.
$6,000 to $9,000 for a week.
That is the all-in range for a family of four, flights included. It sits in the middle of our published guides, above Paris and Nerja, below Switzerland, driven mostly by island lodging and ferry logistics rather than the flight itself.
