How we make money,
in plain language.
Three sources: affiliate commissions on some links, flat fees from families who hire us to plan their trip, and the Tails Around the Globe picture books. Here is exactly how each one works and what it does not buy.
Affiliate links.
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and book or buy something, we may earn a commission from that company. It costs you nothing extra: the price is the same as it would be if you went direct. We are a participant in several affiliate programs, and where a link earns us something it carries a sponsored attribute in the markup and sits below a visible disclosure on that page.
The programs we currently belong to:
- Expedia Group creator and affiliate program (hotels and vacation rentals on Expedia)
- GetYourGuide (tours and tickets)
- SafetyWing (travel medical insurance)
- Skyscanner (flight search)
- Airalo (eSIMs)
- NordVPN
- Boundless Life (a referral link on our Bali guide)
Two things we want to be concrete about. Most disclosure pages are written to be legally sufficient rather than actually informative:
Every product we link to is something we have paid for and traveled with as a family. For places to stay, the Expedia link is a search, not an endorsement of every listing: we tell you what we filter for, and you pick. We do not run roundups of things we have only read about.
The nonstop route reference, the packing list, the school vacation dates and most of the destination guides carry no affiliate links at all. They are the pages we are proudest of, which is worth knowing when you are weighing whether to trust the ones that do.
Planning your trip.
If you hire us to plan your trip, you pay us directly, and you know the number up front: $99 for a trip planning consultation, or from $499 for the booking service (one week, one or two locations, $99 for each extra location). The $99 counts toward the booking service if you upgrade.
Every booking is made in your name, on your own card. No hotel, airline or tour company pays us for sending you to them through this service, so there is nothing pulling us toward one supplier over another. Where we point you to a place using one of the affiliate links above, the same disclosure rules apply as everywhere else on the site.
The books.
We write the Tails Around the Globe picture books, starting with Rosie in Paris, and we earn a royalty when one sells. They are self-published, so that royalty is the whole business model. When we link to the book from a destination page, we are linking to our own product, and we would rather say that plainly than bury it.
Tell us when we are wrong.
A lot of this site is flight routes, opening hours and prices, and all of those decay. We put a verified date on anything that changes and re-check the route pages before each school vacation week, but things will still slip through. If you find something stale or wrong, email kyle@nowhereonearth.com and we will fix it and say so. Corrections are the email we most want to get.
What families ask us.
Do you earn money from the links on this site?
On some of them, yes. If you book or buy through certain links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Those links are marked as sponsored and the page carries a disclosure above the first one. Plenty of links on this site earn us nothing at all.
Does a commission change what you recommend?
No, and the structure is deliberately set up so it cannot. We recommend from what we have used with our own kids, then attach a link or book it if a way to earn from it happens to exist. Several things we recommend most often, including the nonstop route list and the packing list, pay us nothing.
Do you accept free trips or paid placements?
No. We do not currently accept paid placements, sponsored destination coverage, or comped stays given in exchange for coverage. If that ever changes, the page carrying it will say so at the top, in the same size type as everything else on the page, rather than in a footnote.
Are you a travel agency?
No. We are a family that plans trips for other families, not a travel agency, and no supplier pays us to book with them. Our planning fees are paid by you: $99 for a trip planning consultation, or from $499 for the booking service. Every booking is made in your name, on your own card, so you are the airline or hotel customer and have their own support. The only commissions we earn come from affiliate links.
