Where to stay in Greece
with four people.
Athens for the history, Naxos for the beaches. What we actually filter for is simpler than picking a neighborhood: a kitchen, a washer, and an honest look at how the ferry schedule lines up with the flight.
Athens first, then one island, settled in.
Walkable to the Acropolis, Plaka and Monastiraki. Two to three days is plenty before heading to the water, so the base only has to work for a short stretch.
Long sandy beaches, shallow water, a real working town. The island we would send a family to first, with Paros a close second.

Plaka, then Naxos or Paros
Each search opens Vrbo set to two bedrooms and a family of four. On the islands, stay in or near the main town so dinner is a walk.
Links open Vrbo for 2 adults and 2 kids, two bedrooms minimum, no dates set. Vrbo can’t filter by kitchen, so check the listing before you book.
Kitchen, washer, and the ferry gap.
A kitchen and a washer matter here the same way they do in any destination. What is different about Greece is the ferry: a flight rarely lines up with the next boat, so we plan for the gap rather than fighting it. On arrival, if the flight lands too late for a same-day ferry, we stay at the airport hotel and catch a fresh ferry the next morning. On the way out, we do the reverse: ferry back a day early and stay near the port rather than risk a same-day connection with kids.
Once the base is booked.

What families ask us.
Where should a family stay in Athens?
Somewhere walkable to Plaka and Monastiraki, within easy reach of the Acropolis. We plan two to three days here before heading to the islands, so the base only needs to work for a short stretch.
What is the best Greek island for families?
Naxos, which we would send a family to first: long sandy beaches with shallow water, a real working town rather than a postcard, and better value than the more famous islands. Paros is a close second with the same easygoing feel.
What should we filter for beyond the neighborhood?
A kitchen, a washer, and an honest look at ferry timing. A kitchen and washer matter the same way they do anywhere; ferry timing matters more in Greece than almost any other destination, since a flight rarely lines up with the next boat.
Should we stay near the airport or the ferry port on arrival?
If a flight lands too late for a same-day ferry, we stay at the airport hotel the first night and catch a fresh ferry the next day, then do the reverse on the way out: ferry back a day early and stay near the port.
