The best time
to visit the Algarve with kids.
September is the best time to go to Portugal's Algarve with kids, with late May to June a close second: highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, a sea that has had all summer to warm up, and none of August's crowds. We took our girls to Lagos in mid-September, and it was the best time of year we could have picked.
When is the best time to go to Portugal with kids?
For a beach trip, the Algarve in September or from late May to June. For a Lisbon-first city trip, April, May and October are kinder than a hot August. The sea sets the calendar: the Atlantic stays cool, so the months after summer swim better than the months before.
| Best months | September; late May to June |
|---|---|
| Warmest sea | August to early October, around 68 to 72°F in Lagos |
| Hardest months | August for crowds and prices; November to March for beach time |
| Flight from Boston | TAP nonstop to Lisbon year-round, then 55 minutes to Faro or about 3 hours by car |
| Budget cue | About $5,000 to $7,500 for a week, family of four, flights included |

| Apr | 67–69 / 52–54 | 61–63 | Low; busy at Easter | Good for walks. Pools, not the sea. |

Rounded long-term averages for Lagos and Faro. The Atlantic here stays cooler than the Mediterranean, so even September swims run around 70°F. Lisbon runs a few degrees cooler and wetter in winter.
We went in September.
We would pick it again.
Our family visited the Algarve in mid-September, and for us it was truly the best time of year to be there. It was still warmer than New England, so the girls could swim every day, and it was comfortable to be outside from morning until well after dinner. The summer rush had already gone home, so the beaches felt roomy.
We spent most of our time at Praia Dona Ana, a sheltered cove under golden cliffs just outside the center of Lagos. We stayed at the Iberlagos apartments right above it, and the separate kids' pool was a daily win. Our loop was simple: pool in the morning, Dona Ana after lunch, then a walk into town for dinner and the street performers. The boat ride along the cliffs was a favorite too. Full details are in our Lagos and Algarve guide.
Beach days, cliff walks, warm evenings.
The best time of year to visit Portugal:
late May to June, or September.
Both windows stay warm enough for real beach days while avoiding August. Of the two, September is our pick, because the sea has had all summer to warm up. Peak August pushes cost and crowds higher, exactly the trade-off our guide flags: still doable with kids, just with far less room to slow down.
How each New England school week fits Portugal.
February vacation (Feb 15 to 19, 2027). Delta's Lisbon route is suspended January 4 to February 19, 2027, but TAP flies Lisbon nonstop year-round. The Algarve is in the low 60s with almond blossom and a cold sea: a walking-and-Lisbon week, not a beach one.
April vacation (Apr 19 to 23, 2027). Highs in the upper 60s and a sea around 62°F: cliff walks and pool time, split with Lisbon. Easter (March 28) is long past.
Summer. Late June over August. If August is your only option, book early and keep to a pool-and-cove rhythm.
Thanksgiving and December break. Quiet, mild, often rainy, and the cheapest time. Good for Lisbon and cliff walks; not a beach trip.
Our pick: no school week matches our September, but a late-June week comes closest. April vacation works if you split it with Lisbon. Dates are on our school vacation page.
Which month suits which kids.
Babies and toddlers
September or June. Coves like Praia Dona Ana are sheltered, and an apartment with a kids' pool carries the day. Some clifftop paths have no railings, so hold little hands in any month.
Ages 5 to 10
September for daily swims, the boat ride along the golden cliffs, and the Ponta da Piedade boardwalk, which is best from about age 5 given the stairs and cliff edges.
Tweens
September or early October for a kayak tour through the grottoes and a Lisbon bookend. In spring, the same cliff walks without the heat.
What to skip in the wrong month
- August: Praia Dona Ana at midday. Go early or late, when the cove is quieter.
- November to March: a plan built around sea swims. If swimming matters, look for a heated pool.

What families ask us.
What is the best time to go to Portugal with kids?
For the Algarve's beaches, September or late May to June: warm, swimmable weather without August's crowds and prices. For a Lisbon-first trip, April, May and October are more comfortable than peak summer.
Is September a good time to visit the Algarve with kids?
It was the best time of year for our family. We went to Lagos in mid-September: still warmer than New England, warm enough to swim every day, easy to be outside walking around, and the summer crowds were gone.
What is Portugal like in October and November?
October is still warm in the Algarve, with highs usually in the low to mid 70s F, the sea close to its September warmth, and far fewer crowds. November is cooler, in the mid 60s, and one of the wetter months, better for cliff walks, Lisbon and slow days than for beach time.
Is Portugal good to visit in March or May?
March in southern Portugal is mild, usually mid 60s F, but the ocean is still cold for most kids: good for cliff walks and Lisbon, not for swimming. May is warmer, into the 70s, with long days and the summer crowds not yet arrived, though the water is still chilly.
Is the Algarve warm enough to swim outside of summer?
Late May, June and September all work for beach days. The Atlantic peaks around 70 to 72°F in August and September, so early June swims run cooler than September ones, and from November to April the sea is too cold for most kids.
What is the best beach in Lagos, Portugal for kids?
We spent most of our trip at Praia Dona Ana, a sheltered cove below golden cliffs a short walk from the center of Lagos. We stayed at the Iberlagos apartments directly above it, so the beach was a few minutes' walk from our door.
