The Algarve: is it good
for a family trip?

Yes, and it is one connection away from a nonstop. TAP flies Boston to Lisbon nonstop, year-round, and the onward trip to the Algarve is a short flight or a straightforward drive.

The scorecard

How The Algarve scored with our kids.

Six things we rate every trip on, out of 10, from our own family travel, plus our overall score, which is simply the average of the six. Flight ease and value are calculated the same way for every destination.

From our trip. Our favorite days were on the beach at Praia Dona Ana, lying on the sand while the girls played around us, with lunch and a jug of sangria, taking it really slow.

Flight ease

5.7/10

About 11.3 hours total with 1 connection, layover included from Boston. We score every flight the same way: start at 10, take off half a point for each hour beyond 4 (a quarter point per hour past 10), and a point for each connection. TAP and Delta fly Logan to Lisbon nonstop; from there it is a short TAP hop to Faro, or about three hours by car or train to Lagos.

Kid friendly

9/10

The kids' pool at our apartment was a daily win, the coves are calm, the old town has street performers most evenings, and the boat ride along the cliffs was a favorite. Some clifftop paths have no railings, so hold little hands.

Walkability

8/10

From Lagos you can walk to several beaches and the old town, but day trips to Sagres or the Ria Formosa need a car or train.

Value

7.1/10

Portugal's cost of living index is 48.7 (Numbeo, mid-2026, where New York is 100 and the US overall is 69.7), about 30% below home. We score value the same way for every destination: costing the same as home is a 5, and every 10 points cheaper or pricier moves it a point. It is a country-wide average, so big cities and tourist hot spots run higher and small towns and villages lower. Peak August runs well above this number; shoulder season is where Portugal's value shows.

Food

8/10

Easy, relaxed lunches, fresh fish and gelato, at a price that makes long lunches the plan rather than the splurge.

Weather

9/10

Sunny and dreamy in shoulder season, crowded and hot in August.

Overall

7.8/10

Slow beach days done right; the connection from Boston is the only real cost.

The flight

Nonstop to Lisbon, then Faro or a drive south.

TAP's Boston to Lisbon route runs nonstop, year-round. From Lisbon, TAP flies on to Faro in about 55 minutes, or families with extra time and a rental car can drive south in about 3 hours, seeing a bit of the country along the way.
