Dates checked against each event's own site on October 1, 2026. Ice Castles, A Forest of Lights, Lantern Light Village, the Faneuil Hall and Portland tree lightings and First Night had not posted 2026 details yet, so those rows show last season's pattern. Winterfest Hartford did not run in 2025 and says its 2026 season depends on fundraising.
Which New England winter events are best for young kids?
Ice Castles is the one worth a dedicated trip: hand-built ice tunnels and towers, lit at night, unlike anything else on this list. Holidays at the Newport Mansions pairs a half-mile lighted walking path at The Breakers with real Gilded Age grandeur, a good option for a family that wants a slightly bigger day out. Winterfest Hartford stands out for offering free outdoor ice skating alongside its lights, a rarity at this scale of event.
What families ask us.
What are the best winter and holiday events across New England?
Ten real events spanning all six states, from Ice Castles in North Woodstock, NH to the Newport Mansions' holiday light path in Rhode Island. This list pulls the biggest regional draws rather than repeating our state-specific lists.
What is Holidays at the Newport Mansions?
Three Gilded Age mansions in Newport, RI (The Breakers, Marble House and, on weekends, Chateau-sur-Mer), decorated for the season. In 2026 the houses are dressed from November 21 to January 3. Sparkling Lights at The Breakers is a separate evening ticket: a half-mile lighted path on the grounds plus the decorated house, on select nights through December 27.
Is there a good winter event in Connecticut?
Two: Lantern Light Village at Mystic Seaport Museum, a Dickens-themed walk-through village on select December evenings, and Winterfest Hartford, which offers free outdoor ice skating in Bushnell Park, a rarity for a big regional event. Its rink is set to open November 27, 2026, after the event skipped the 2025 season.
How is this different from the state-specific event lists?
This page pulls the single biggest or most unique draw from each state rather than covering any one state in depth. Our Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine pages each go deeper on their own state's full calendar.
What is winter in New England like for a family trip?
Cold, often snowy, and busier with events than people expect: most holiday light displays run from late November into early January, and Ice Castles in North Woodstock, NH is the one worth a dedicated trip. It is dark by late afternoon in December, so plan the day around daylight. State by state: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont.
Where this fits.

Ice Castles, the Cog Railway, and skiing at Gunstock.
