Where are the best places to see
fall foliage in New England?
Ranked by drive time from Boston, where most readers start, the same way we rank weekend getaways year round. In the fall, the two farthest options on that list, the Berkshires and the White Mountains, move up: both sit in the peak-color band and both are built for a foliage weekend.
Quieter in October than summer, and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens runs its own fall programming. Our full guide to the town.
Hills instead of harbor towns, and squarely in the central New England peak window. Better for a family comfortable with more driving between stops.
The Kancamagus Highway is the postcard, and the reason to go on a weekday if you can. See the road-trip section below before you book a weekend.
What is there to do with kids
in New England in the fall?
The reliable list, in the order most families work through it: apple picking, a cider donut, a corn maze, a county fair, and the first cold-weather hike of the year. None of it needs a reservation, and most of it is a two-hour visit rather than a full day, which matters with a toddler.
Pick-your-own orchards run weekends from early September through late October. A cider donut stand and a short hayride are the reliable extras, and neither needs a reservation.
Most family farms open a maze alongside the orchard in October. Go before 1pm with young kids. The evening flashlight versions are built for older kids and teenagers.
Where is the best apple picking
in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts has working orchards in nearly every region, from the Pioneer Valley in the west to the North Shore. The pattern that holds up everywhere: a family-run farm, pick-your-own rows, a cider donut stand, and a short hayride, open weekends from early September through late October.
We're building out our own ranked list of the orchards we've actually taken the girls to. Check back this season, or follow along on Instagram as we post them.
What fall events are worth
planning a trip around?
Three to start with, all real and dated for 2026. We keep the full list of ten, with admission and family tips for each, on its own page.
America's oldest continuously running agricultural fair, dating to 1818. The giant pumpkin weigh-off and Kiddie Land are the draws for younger kids.
Free, and enormous for a one-day event: 60,000 people and nearly 350 vendors fill downtown Dover for a single Saturday.
Maine's largest agricultural fair, eight straight days, with western Maine foliage as the backdrop.
Dates as published for the 2026 season by each event's own listing. Confirm before you go, since farms and festivals shift these from year to year. State by state: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. See all 10 fall events, with admission and family tips →
Is a New England autumn road trip
worth it with young children?
Yes, with one adjustment: go on a weekday if you can, or arrive by 9am on a weekend. Leaf-peeper traffic on routes like the Kancamagus Highway can turn a scenic 45 minutes into two hours, which matters far more to a toddler than the foliage does. The color itself is genuinely beautiful and genuinely low-effort. The traffic is the only part that isn't.
What if you miss peak?
Chase it south. If northern New Hampshire has already dropped its leaves, southern Massachusetts and coastal Connecticut are often still a week or two from peak. The region's six-week spread is a feature here, not a limitation, and it's the one thing none of the foliage-tracker sites tell you to do.
What does a fall weekend cost
a family of four?
A drivable weekend keeps this cheap relative to anything requiring a flight. Figure $250 to $450 for two nights at a New England inn or motel in foliage season, $60 to $120 for a day of apple picking and a farm stand for four people, and gas. No flights, no park tickets, no five-figure trip to plan around.
