Maine with kids,
beyond Boothbay Harbor.
Boothbay Harbor was the trip that proved this site's format works, but it is not the only Maine coast we know. Portland and Bar Harbor are two more places to visit in Maine that we have actually taken the girls to, and they earn a spot on the map for very different reasons.
Portland, Maine with kids: walkable, working, and forgiving of a picky eater.
The Old Port is compact and walkable, a real working waterfront rather than a tourist set piece, with lighthouses a short drive away and enough food variety that a picky eater is never the crisis it could be somewhere with fewer options. It is close enough to Boothbay Harbor and the rest of the Midcoast to fold into the same trip as a single extra day, rather than needing its own dedicated weekend.
Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park: worth its own weekend.
Acadia National Park has genuinely easy, short trails alongside its bigger ones, and the drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain needs no hiking at all, which makes the park's signature view accessible to a family with a toddler in tow. Bar Harbor itself is a real walkable town for food and a break between park time. It sits roughly 4 to 5 hours from Boston, further than Boothbay or Portland, so we would treat it as its own weekend rather than a stop tacked onto a shorter trip.

Where should a family stay for Acadia?
Bar Harbor itself, so you can walk to dinner after a day in the park.

What families ask us.
Is Portland, Maine good for a family day trip?
Yes. The Old Port is walkable and compact, with working waterfront, lighthouses nearby, and enough food options that a picky eater is never the crisis it could be elsewhere. It works well as a single day added onto a Boothbay Harbor or Midcoast trip.
Is Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park worth it with young kids?
Yes, and it is the bigger payoff of the two. Acadia has genuinely easy, short trails and a drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain that needs no hiking at all, alongside a real walkable town in Bar Harbor for food and a break.
How far is Bar Harbor from Boston?
Roughly 4 to 5 hours by car, further than Boothbay Harbor or Portland, so it works best as its own weekend rather than a stop tacked onto a shorter trip.
Should we combine Portland and Bar Harbor in one trip?
Only with real time to spare. They sit roughly 3 hours apart, so pairing them means a genuine road trip along the coast rather than two quick stops. Most families are better served picking one and giving it a full weekend.

What are the best places to visit in Maine for a family vacation?
The three we have done with the girls: Boothbay Harbor for a walkable harbor-town long weekend about 3 hours from Boston, Portland for an easy coastal day, and Bar Harbor with Acadia National Park for the biggest payoff at roughly 4 to 5 hours.
