What to pack for Iceland
with kids.
Iceland is a layers trip, not a summer trip, no matter what month you go. This covers only what to add on top of our base family packing list.
Layers, waterproof outer shell, warm hat.
Summer days typically run in the 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, so plan for a base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a genuinely waterproof (not just water-resistant) outer shell for every family member. Add a warm hat and gloves even for a July trip; wind off the coast cuts through a light jacket fast. Waterfall spray at stops like Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss will soak anyone who walks up close, so quick-dry layers underneath help.
We went in September 2018 with our daughter Selima at 8 to 9 months old, and she rode in a front carrier on the trails and the black-sand beach (you can see it in the photos here). For a baby, a carrier under a parent's waterproof shell beats a stroller on anything that isn't paved.
Pack swimsuits, even in winter.
Geothermal pools are one of Iceland's genuine highlights with kids, and they run year-round regardless of the air temperature outside. Bring swimsuits, a change of clothes for after, and a small dry bag for wet gear on the drive back. One honest note: we skipped the Blue Lagoon because of the baby, and we'd definitely do it next time. The big lagoons set minimum ages for children, so check before you pack for one.
If a glacier hike is on the plan.
Our glacier hike just outside Vik was incredible, and it's the one activity that changes the packing list. We'd recommend it as a family hike once kids are about 8 to 10 or older; with a baby in our group, the adults took turns. Guided tours generally supply the crampons, harness and ice axe. What you bring: sturdy waterproof hiking boots, waterproof pants, warm layers, gloves and a hat. Check your tour's list and minimum age before you book.
The one thing that doesn’t go in the bag.

Search Vrbo rentals, already set to Reykjavík. Look for two bedrooms and a full kitchen. Where we would stay. Affiliate link, our disclosure.
What families ask us.
What should kids wear in Iceland in the summer?
Layers, even in July. Summer days typically run in the 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, so a base layer, a warm mid-layer and a waterproof outer shell matter more than shorts and t-shirts.
Do you need rain gear in Iceland?
Yes, and waterproof rather than just water-resistant. Weather turns fast, and waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss put real spray on anyone standing near them.
Should we pack swimsuits for Iceland?
Yes, for the geothermal pools, which are a genuine highlight with kids year-round regardless of the outside temperature. Pack them even for a winter trip.
