Malaysia: is it good
for a family trip?
Yes, for a family ready for a genuine long-haul trip. Reaching Kuala Lumpur from Boston takes one stop, using the same hub set as Bali, and Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong was the most reliable option through 2026.
The Fredette Family in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
How Malaysia scored with our kids.
Six things we rate every trip on, out of 10, from our own family travel, plus our overall score, which is simply the average of the six. Flight ease and value are calculated the same way for every destination.
From our trip. We really liked Kuala Lumpur. Our rental had a pool on the roof with a full playground, the girls loved exploring LaLaport, and at the Petronas Towers there is the biggest playground you have ever seen, with a giant kids' pool.
Flight ease
3.1/10About 21.5 hours total with 1 connection, layover included from Boston. We score every flight the same way: start at 10, take off half a point for each hour beyond 4 (a quarter point per hour past 10), and a point for each connection. No nonstop: one connection, through Dubai, Doha or Hong Kong.
Kid friendly
8.5/10Pretty kid friendly: the rooftop pool and playground at our apartment, LaLaport mall with more for kids to do, and the huge playground and free splash pad at KLCC Park under the towers.
Walkability
3/10Terrible for walking; we took Grab or Gojek everywhere. The good news is that rides often cost just a few dollars.
Value
8.6/10Malaysia's cost of living index is 34 (Numbeo, mid-2026, where New York is 100 and the US overall is 69.7), about 51% below home. We score value the same way for every destination: costing the same as home is a 5, and every 10 points cheaper or pricier moves it a point. It is a country-wide average, so big cities and tourist hot spots run higher and small towns and villages lower. Remarkably affordable, apart from the flights.
Food
8.5/10Great food: hawker stalls and mall food courts are cheap, tasty and endlessly kid-pleasing.
Weather
5/10Hot and humid, with real downpours; plan air-conditioned breaks midday.
Overall
6.1/10Easy, affordable and fun with kids, as long as you ride rather than walk.
