Ireland: is it good
for a family trip?
Yes, and it is one of our two picks for the easiest first trip abroad. Aer Lingus flies Boston to Dublin nonstop 2 to 3 times daily, and the trip home has a real perk: US customs preclearance in Dublin.

How Ireland scored with our kids.
Six things we rate every trip on, out of 10, from our own family travel, plus our overall score, which is simply the average of the six. Flight ease and value are calculated the same way for every destination.
Flight ease
8.9/10About 6.1 hours nonstop from Boston. We score every flight the same way: start at 10, take off half a point for each hour beyond 4 (a quarter point per hour past 10), and a point for each connection. Aer Lingus flies Boston to Dublin nonstop twice a day, with Delta and JetBlue on the route too. In summer (roughly March to October) Aer Lingus also flies nonstop to Shannon, closer to the west coast.
Kid friendly
8/10You do not need to drive far to experience Ireland, and there is a ton of open, green, beautiful space to hike and play. There are not many kid-specific attractions, nothing like Disneyland near Paris, which is why it is an 8. Like Greece, the restaurants and pubs are extremely welcoming: everyone is kind and accepting of kids being out in public.
Walkability
6.5/10Dublin is a walking city; we wandered the little shops and restaurants with the girls. Each town you drive to is very walkable once you are there. But with kids it is a car country: public transport is not nearly as good as elsewhere in Europe, so you cannot just walk to a train and end up somewhere new.
Value
4.9/10Ireland's cost of living index is 70.8 (Numbeo, mid-2026, where New York is 100 and the US overall is 69.7), about 2% above home. We score value the same way for every destination: costing the same as home is a 5, and every 10 points cheaper or pricier moves it a point. It is a country-wide average, so big cities and tourist hot spots run higher and small towns and villages lower. Dublin runs above this number, and the smaller west-coast towns below it.
Food
7/10Some may disagree, but Ireland does comfort food really well: hearty traditional dishes and really high-quality lamb and beef. Over the past 10 years the newer and fusion food scene has come a long way, and in the small towns on the west and south coasts you can get really good fish, lighter and just delicious.
Weather
6.5/10Ireland sits in a wet, damp climate that is unpredictably cool. You may get some really good weather and you may get some really bad weather; go in knowing that is Irish weather.
Overall
7.0/10An easy flight and some of the warmest welcomes for kids anywhere; the weather and needing a car keep it from the top.
