The scorecard

How England scored with our kids.

Six things we rate every trip on, out of 10, from our own family travel, plus our overall score, which is simply the average of the six. Flight ease and value are calculated the same way for every destination.

Flight ease

8.7/10

About 6.7 hours nonstop from Boston. We score every flight the same way: start at 10, take off half a point for each hour beyond 4 (a quarter point per hour past 10), and a point for each connection. The busiest route out of Logan: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American, Delta and JetBlue fly nonstop to London Heathrow, about six flights a day.

Kid friendly

8/10

Really kid friendly. We stayed in London and did so much; the girls loved the London Eye, the big Ferris wheel. We did not get to the river boats, which they would have loved, as long as your kids are old enough to swim (it is a little stressful if they cannot). Outside London, the countryside makes it easy to find parks and green space to walk around, and everybody is really friendly. It lands at 8 because, outside London, seeing England means time in the car.

Walkability

9.5/10

London is super walkable, and anything you cannot walk to is a quick ride on the Tube, then you walk again. The half point off is because seeing the rest of England takes a car.

Value

5.2/10

The UK's cost of living index is 68.2 (Numbeo, mid-2026, where New York is 100 and the US overall is 69.7), about 2% below home. We score value the same way for every destination: costing the same as home is a 5, and every 10 points cheaper or pricier moves it a point. It is a country-wide average, so big cities and tourist hot spots run higher and small towns and villages lower. London runs well above this number; the countryside and smaller towns run below it.

Food

7.5/10

Hearty comfort food, like Ireland, plus London: you can get literally any food you want there, and it is very, very good, with a ton of great Indian and Middle Eastern food.

Weather

7/10

Usually pretty wet and rainy, but a little better than Ireland; you do get more good days.

Overall

7.6/10

London alone makes it one of the easiest, most fun cities we have done with kids.

The flight

The most frequent route from Logan.

Roughly 8 flights a day run between Boston and London Heathrow across 5 airlines. That density means real schedule flexibility, which matters most during a fixed school vacation week when everyone else is booking the same dates.

What to know

London, then the Cotswolds.

Our full guide covers London for a week, then extends into the Cotswolds and Bourton-on-the-Water for a two-week add-on, with an honest note about what we would skip.
