The best time
to visit Switzerland with kids.
June through September is the best time to visit Switzerland with kids: every cable car and cog railway is running, the valley paths are clear for a stroller, and highs sit in the upper 60s to mid 70s. We went in July with a 1-year-old and would pick summer again. Switzerland in winter is a ski trip, a real option, just a different one.
When is the best time to visit Switzerland with kids?
July and August for the full valley, June and September for the same with fewer people. The months to avoid are the in-between ones, November and late April, when many mountain lifts pause for maintenance and the Lauterbrunnen Valley is neither a hiking trip nor a ski trip.
| Best months | June to September; July and August for the high trails |
|---|---|
| Ski season | Roughly mid-December to early or mid-April in the Jungfrau region |
| Hardest months | November and late April, when many lifts close for maintenance |
| Flight from Boston | About 7 hours nonstop to Zurich, then about 2 hours 45 minutes by train to Lauterbrunnen |
| Budget cue | About $8,000 to $12,000 for a week, family of four, the highest of our guides |

Rounded averages for the Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen valley floor. Wengen and Mürren sit higher and run roughly 5 to 10°F cooler, and weather turns fast at altitude in every month. Lift dates shift each year, so check each cable car’s schedule.
June through September.
This window keeps the Lauterbrunnen Valley's waterfalls, the cable cars to Mürren and Grindelwald, and the village walks fully open, without the deep snow that limits access the rest of the year. Early June has the loudest waterfalls from snowmelt but snow on the high trails; July and August open everything.
Switzerland in winter: a ski trip, not a hiking trip.
Wengen, Grindelwald and Mürren all run as ski areas in winter: lift tickets, cold-weather gear, and daylight that ends by mid-afternoon. It suits a family that already skis, or is ready to start, more than a first trip with a baby still napping mid-day. Ski weeks are peak season on top of already high prices.
How each New England school week fits Switzerland.
February vacation (Feb 15 to 19, 2027). A real family ski week: the Zurich nonstop runs year-round and the Jungfrau region is in full swing. It overlaps European ski holidays, so book lessons and lodging early. The full plan is in Switzerland in February vacation week.
April vacation (Apr 19 to 23, 2027). The awkward one. Easter 2027 is March 28, so skiing is winding down, some lifts may be closed for maintenance, and the high trails are still under snow. A valley-and-waterfalls week with a toddler can work.
Summer. The best Switzerland. Everything runs in July and August; book Wengen or Mürren lodging early.
Thanksgiving and December break. Thanksgiving week is the true off-season, with many lifts paused, so skip it. December break lines up with ski season opening and Christmas markets, though early-season snow varies.
Our pick: summer if you can, February if your family skis. Skip Thanksgiving week and think twice about April. Dates are on our school vacation page.
July in Wengen, with a 1-year-old.
We went in July and based in Wengen, the car-free village up the cogwheel train from Lauterbrunnen, with a 1-year-old who was mostly along for the ride. It was so beautiful. We got around by lift and train to the neighboring villages, played on the playgrounds and had lunch wherever we landed. The cog railways, cable cars and trams mesmerized her, and because the valley paths are paved, the stroller went nearly everywhere.
Two honest July notes. It's expensive, so a self-catering apartment and a regional travel pass help. And the weather turns fast at altitude, so we packed layers even in high summer. You don't need to summit Jungfraujoch with little kids; the valley has more than enough.
Which month suits which kids.
Babies and toddlers
July and August, when every train and lift runs and the paved valley paths are clear. For the youngest, the transport is the attraction. Winter with a baby is a lot of cost for very little the baby can do.
Ages 5 to 10
Summer for Trümmelbach Falls, the walk from Mürren down to Gimmelwald, and Grindelwald First. In February, this is the prime age for ski school, as long as lessons are booked ahead.
Tweens
September for longer hikes with fewer people, or a February ski week on bigger runs. Save Jungfraujoch for this age.
What to skip in the wrong month
- November: the Jungfrau region entirely. Many cable cars pause for annual maintenance before ski season.
- May: plans that need the high trails. Snow often lingers up high into June.

What families ask us.
What is the best time to visit Switzerland with kids?
June through September, when every cable car, hiking trail and cliffside village in the Lauterbrunnen Valley is open and the weather is mild enough for full days outside with young kids.
Is July a good time to visit Switzerland with a toddler?
It's when we went, with a 1-year-old, and it was ideal. Everything was running, the paved valley paths took the stroller, and the cogwheel trains and cable cars kept her entertained. Pack layers, since the weather turns fast at altitude.
Is Switzerland in winter good for kids?
Yes, for a family that skis or is ready to start. Wengen, Grindelwald and Mürren all run as ski areas, and the Zurich nonstop flies year-round, so February vacation week works. Book ski lessons well ahead of a fixed school week.
What is Switzerland like in December and January?
Ski season. Most resorts open in December, Christmas markets fill the cities, and January is usually the coldest month, with short days. In the Jungfrau region, Wengen, Grindelwald and Mürren all run as ski areas, so it's a trip for a family that skis or is ready to start.
Is October, November or April a good time for Switzerland with kids?
They're the in-between months. October can be lovely, with fall color and quiet trails. November is the true off-season, when many mountain cable cars pause for annual maintenance before ski season. April is similar: skiing winds down around Easter and some lifts close for their spring break. Check each cable car's schedule before booking.
Is Switzerland expensive to visit with kids?
Yes. It runs on the higher end of our published cost ranges in any season, about $8,000 to $12,000 for a week for a family of four. Timing changes what is open more than it changes the price.
